Get to know Alice:

Hi everyone! My name is Alice Golden and I’m thrilled to be the guest designer at Emma’s Paperie this month! I live in Massachusetts with my husband, three boys – ages 13, 11, and 8 – a dog, two cats and assorted fish. I got started in paper crafting about ten years ago as a rubber stamper, but quickly became addicted to creating all kinds of paper crafts and scrapbook projects. I especially love making home décor and gift items and had a hard time choosing which fun products I wanted to work with this month – I think it’s great that Emma’s has so many unique containers and packaging ideas.

Although I still consider myself mainly a SAHM, I’ve been lucky to have been able to turn my love of paper crafting into a part-time (sometimes closer to full-time!) job. I taught classes at a LSS for five years until the store closed and then I finally got up the nerve to submit some projects to Paper Crafts Magazine. Since my first project was published in August 2004, they have kept me pretty busy and I just finished serving a two-year term on their Editorial Board which was a total blast. I’ve also been designing for a bunch of different manufacturers - including Karen Foster Design, Me & My BIG Ideas, Technique Tuesday, Therm O Web and Green Sneakers. I’m really excited about starting to teach classes again and will be heading down under at the end of next month for the Australasian Scrapbook and Papercraft Convention in Brisbane. When my husband and I were first married, we lived in New Zealand for three years, so I can’t wait to catch up with old friends in that part of the world!

In addition to paper crafting, I love to read, cook and work in my vegetable garden. We live in an old farmhouse (it was built in 1768) and that is the source of never ending projects. Most of the time it seems like our house will never actually be “finished”…the work that we did when we first moved in 15 years ago is starting to look dated and I still don’t have that master bathroom that I’ve been dreaming about (yes – I have to share my bathroom with my husband AND three messy boys!!). One change that we have made recently though is moving my creative space from a corner of our laundry room into what was supposed to be the formal living room. Actually my stuff had taken over not just the laundry room, but was exploding into the hallway, our bedroom and most of the few upstairs closets our house has. It is so wonderful to finally have everything in one place! This is the first time I’ve ever taken photos of my new space and I’m excited to share.

(Scraproom1) This is the view of my desk reflected in the mirror over the fireplace (one of the perks of living in such an old house is that we have lots of fireplaces).

(Scraproom2) Eventually I plan on moving my computer to sit on the second table, but for now it holds recent purchases and products for design team assignments.

(Scraproom3, 4, 5, 6) Gotta love IKEA! This storage unit holds so much – I put a lot of my flowers and buttons in glass jars and the drawers are great for keeping design team products handy.

(Scraproom7) Another IKEA find in the “as is” section – I use this to store most of my coloring mediums – pencils, crayons, markers, paints, glitter, etc.

(Scraproom8, 9) A nearby closet keeps all my papers, stickers, rub-ons and embellishments organized and hidden away. These two tall stackable drawer units are my best purchase ever! You would not believe how much each unit holds!! I keep my ribbon sorted by color in these drawers – it’s so easy to pull out a drawer when I need something, bring it to my table, and then pop it right back into place when I’m done. I love being organized (can you tell how much I love my label maker…my husband teases me that I’ll be trying to put a label on him next LOL). I’ve been so much more productive now that I have this space.

I recently have gotten much better about updating my blog and I would love it if you stop by www.alicegolden.typepad.com. I’m going to be having my own contest later this week to help me come up with a name for my blog that isn’t so goofy J. Thanks so much!! ~Alice

ooooh - I just LOVE your space, Alice. My Ikea storage shelves don't have all those drawers and doors. Your work is beautiful and I love your picks!

Wow! You have a great room to create in. Love all the IKEA stuff. I wish i lived closer to one.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Julie - isn't it great to be out of the laundry room? it was such a pain trying to work while the washer was in spin cycle :)

Teresa - with 3 boys, a dog and two furry cats, have no worries - my house is often a pigsty LOL It makes me crazy though...I just don't feel productive when everything is a mess

and About Me - the large bookshelf is the large Expedit unit and now they have separate drawer and door units you can purchase. I like being able to hide a lot of it away...behind all the doors are where I keep my "alterables" and they are all just shoved in there any old way they will fit.

Keep the comments coming - and good luck in the contest - those products are fun, but I especially LOVE the papers - just gorgeous!
